Institutions
Training takes place at “institutions,” that host the fellows for training. The various training sites are:
University Hospital (UH)
University Hospital-University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey is located in Newark, New Jersey and is the site for several required rotations for residents, including consultation-liaison service, emergency room rotation, autism clinic and pediatric neurology clinic. University Hospital is a 504-bed general hospital that in the past year saw 18,720 admissions and 78,616 general emergency room visits. 72% of the inpatients are from Essex County with 51% from Newark, 8% from Orange and 6% from Irvington. 61% of inpatients are charity care, self-pay, Medicaid and Medicaid-HMO. 17% of inpatients are Medicare. Caseload and supervision varies depending on the specific rotation. Residents are excused from all clinical obligations during scheduled teaching activities. Didactics are held in the building that houses UBHC and the Department of Psychiatry, adjacent to the medical school and University and require a half-day each week of the resident’s time.
University Behavioral HealthCare (UBHC)
UBHC is a statewide mental health delivery system of UMDNJ. Two UBHC clinical divisions that serve children and their families, Children’s Services and Extended Treatment, are sites for clinica experiences for residents. The UBHC Children’s Services Outpatient Clinic (ChOC) provides about 1000 visits per month to a caseload of about 600 patients. Within this service, children ages 3-17, with a wide variety of presenting problems are seen for individual, family, and group therapy, as well as medication monitoring. Children’s Services also maintains a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) for up to 40 youngsters. Fellows have required rotations at UBHC in their 2nd year of training. The UBHC PHP serves as a primary clinical rotation in one of three 4-month blocks in the second year. There is a second block of four months with a mixed outpatient caseload and finally a four-month primary outpatient block. During the PHP rotations, depending on the particular block, fellows have responsibility for 15-25 patients for pharmacotherapy which also includes monthly family meetings. Residents are also active participants in group therapy and in the milieu. Fellows receive at least 1 hour per week of scheduled supervision, spend 3 hours in team meetings and receive additional supervision as needed. During the outpatient clinic rotation, fellows have responsibility for a caseload of 30-40 patients – 3-5 cases for individual therapy, 30-35 medication cases. In ChOC fellows receive 2 hours of supervision. In addition, during the blocks that the fellows are not assigned to ChOC, the fellows are expected to maintain a small caseload (2-4 cases) of outpatients through the clinic for a required, ongoing Continuity Clinic experience for which 1 hour of supervision is also provided. Residents are excused from clinical duties to attend all didactic seminars and conferences, approximately five hours each week. Since UBHC and the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are housed in the same building, travel time to educational meetings is negligible.
